To the person who spelled my middle name incorrectly on my birth certificate: I applaud you for your creative license. You took a strange spelling and turned it into an even stranger spelling. You recognized that although I was merely minutes old, I strove to be unique.
To my first grade teacher who looked at my deranged, curly hair and asked me “Doesn’t your mother ever comb your hair?”: Yes, bitch, she did. Whoops, I thank you for caring enough about my personal grooming to have said something.
To the doctor who said, “It’s fun getting your tonsils out. You can eat all the ice cream you want afterward.”: I thank you for this. Although swallowing ice cream right after the surgery was the equivalent of swallowing sandpaper with nails embedded in it, I was able to eat it and enjoy it in vast quantities by the following day. And, thanks to your permission, I have continued to do exactly that for the 55 years that have followed.
To Mrs Lavin, my sixth grade teacher, who had me spend day after day transferring her knitting patterns onto graph paper: To this day, the sight of tiny x’s gives me an anxiety attack. But the permanent lipstick on your teeth has taught me the importance of blotting. I thank you for that.
To the girl in junior high who used to sit across from me in the lunchroom, whose dirty overly-long nails would sink into her white bread sandwich: I thank you for impressing upon me the importance of both keeping my nails clean and avoiding white bread.
To Danny Irons, who accepted my invitation to my senior prom, waited until I had purchased tickets, then told me he couldn’t go with me. I thank you for notifying me before my dress was purchased. And, if you are reading this now, know that I did get my money refunded for the tickets. I’m sure you have worried about this over the years.
To the boy who chased me around a bed in college: I later learned that being chased around a bed could, indeed, be tons of fun. Just not with you.
To the woman in the coat department who refused to sell the 30-year-old me a coat until I brought my mother in: I was upset with you then. I wish I could hug you now.
To the person who, on the day I joined a gym, said, “Gyms make money from people like you. They join and then never go.”: I thank you. Because of that one remark, I committed to proving you wrong. I have been going to the gym regularly for 36 years now, still proving you wrong.
HAPPY VALENTINES DAY, Dearest Buttheads. I wouldn’t be the Me I am today without you.

The first thing I ate after my tonsillectomy was cherry-vanilla ice cream. Cheap cherry-vanilla ice cream. Cheap cherry-vanilla ice cream full of rock-hard frozen cherries that were so shriveled up that they had sharp jagged edges. It was basically Rocks And Shards Of Glass ice cream.

Life in the Boomer Lane

I was plagued with looking way younger then my age. Boys didn’t talk to me because they thought I was a little kid. The coat lady thought I was too young to be spending so much money on my own (That wouldn’t happen nowadays, when little kids run around with credit cards).

This is perfect for my purposes: my post for tomorrow is about alternatives to Valentine’s Day as a romantic holiday. I’d like to link to this as an example of the lost art of V-Day hate letters, instead of love letters. If you don’t want the pingback just let me know.

I can help a little at least as far as Mrs. Lavin goes cause I grew up with the infamous Dr. Larry Lavin, who, if I’m not mistaken is still in federal prison…he used to like to set me up to get in trouble…which I could be counted on to do in those days…I stole 13 copies of “Build Me Up Buttercup” when we were 13 and I got caught while he waited upstairs and I never ratted on him…til now…remember Larry? But we did have fun at Cardinal Cushing Academy till he left for Exeter…but not before his brother Rusty tormented me about my acne so frequently and mercilessly on the 13 mile bus trip to and fro that I acted out and got thrown off the bus…a big deal when you live 13 miles away…I think Rusty eventually ratted on Larry when the feds threatened to take his Nintendo away…so happy Valentine’s Day to the Lavins…I remember meeting their Dobermans who were nice enough but otheriwise I’m coming up blank on good time memories…well, I guess the party’s over now Dr. Snow…guess you were’t the smartest kid to come out of Bradford after all or if you were it goes to show that even someone as smart as you never factors in the variable of having rats in your family…

I think you are the only person who asked that. My middle name is Ilene. On the birth certificate it says “Ileen.” Back in 1947, that was mighty strange, indeed.

The coat story reminds me of having to be signed in, by my then-girlfriend’s mom, to use the swimming pool at Sun City West years ago, because we were under 55. And my daughter wanted fast food, not ice cream, after tonsil surgery. I think I ate most of the ice cream that I stocked up on.
Anyway, funny post.

Geez! It is always amazing to me…the people who can remember all this stuff from like, SECOND Grade and teacher’s names and traumatic shit you felt they did to you! Thankfully (must be) I cannot remember stuff like you “hate”. I only “hate” my fiancee` for not understanding me and giving me the sudden silent treatment in the present day! I congratulate your Freshly Pressence!
Life in the Boomer Lane
February 13, 2012
I’m laughing because I can’t even tell you what I had for dinner tonight. “Hate” is a word that should be used alomst never, except for blog titles. The “shit” I write about is the silly stuff of life, not the traumatic. Hey, go give your fiance a big Valentine’s Day kiss.

You mean you have to go to the gym ? So “join and lose weight” is just another lying gimmick. I want my money back. Those cards from the 50’s we used at school – so silly, so corny. But looking back from today’s world they seem precious and charming because of their simple wholesomeness of a generation not contaminated by social filth.

I love the idea of anti-valentines! Hmmm…. I could do one to the man of the house, not a hate one, but one thanking him for all the times he forgot valentines day. It makes me appreciate the ones he does remember all the more, and gives me something to tease him about the rest of the time!
Life in the Boomer Lane
February 13, 2012
You could do that. You could also go out and buy yourself jewelry and say, “Look what you got me for Valentine’s Day, Darling!” He’ll probably never forget the card again.

I had a teacher in fifth grade, let’s see, that was maybe 1960. While we were taking a test he would go around the room and run his finger up and down the backs of us little girls to see who was wearing a bra. Of course I had my training bra hidden under an undershirt because I wasn’t proud of my little boobs. I remembered this about a month ago, I delighted in the sexual misconduct suit I could have launched against the pervert, who, in this day and age would have been a registered sex offender. I’m sure he’s dead now. Kudos to you, Renee, to speak out about some of your demons! Great!

Oh, I love this! I’ve had a few similar experiences. . . the tonsils, for sure, and believe it or not, the strange middle name misspelling. My fourth grade teacher, Mrs. MacGregor, must have gone to the same teacher’s college as your Mrs. Lavin. She didn’t have us do her knitting patterns, but she did bring all of her brass and silver to class and had us spend half a day polishing it.
Too bad you and I couldn’t have hair-averaging. Mine was straight, so my mother made me get gawd-awful perms from some grump while they discussed my cowlicks and that my hair was like a horse’s tail.
Life in the Boomer Lane
February 14, 2012
That is crazy! Tonsils, middle name, nutball teacher. I feel like we are soulmates. Yeah, the hair thing. It sort of ruined my life from the moment of my birth. One solid year of being completely bald, followed by my headsprouting complete nonsense.

Looked from a different angle, the people we hate can all make something better in ourselves. Thanks for the article – live positively and live happily! 🙂

This was really interesting. The best reading I’ve done for as far as I can remember. It brought me a flood of very different emotions – the tone of hate and then thankfullness… This was very intersting. You made me wonder what kibnda of list of people and events I’d make…
Great post!

Nice read. =)
You’re right…none of us would be who we are if not for the people and events that happened along life’s journey…I especially love the way you presented the point.

Haha funny post!
I’m pretty sure making a sixth grader transfer cross-stich patterns qualifies as child-labour. Perhaps you should claim your wages… with interest. 🙂 Now, that would be a great V-Day gift.

Oh my goodness! I mistakenly read this blog while I was at work and I had to stiffle my laughter at every sentence! This is pure genius, and exactly the type of humour I thrive off. Fantastic blog post *thumbs up*

I love the positive spin you put on all of these, but the dry wittiness of it all pleases me even more!
Here’s to the people we become, when we’ve got it together enough to move beyond the “Dearest Buttheads” of the world! =^_~=

Thanks for the laughter… I was actually in a really grumpy mood yesterday, Valentine’s Day, so I totally appreciate your memories of the dirt bags in your past. Then you know, My Husband gave me a Valentine’s box of DeMets Turtles (most of which I have already eaten), and it turns out I can totally be bought. Sigh.

Hey, that’s great. I can be bought, as well, but Now Husband kept the VISA card safely in his pocket this year.

Sorry to be late to the party, but congrats on being “Pressed.” I had no idea why I was scanning the old “Pressed” screens until I saw your blog. This acknowledgement is well deserved and not just for this post, but the many, many fabulous posts you have here.
You are a terrific writer and have been so kind to me these past months . . . Thank you for sharing both your words and heart.

Wow, I didn’t even know one could view old Pressed screens. Is that why people continue to respond to this post? I thank you for your comments. We all, but especially those of us who are writers, touch each other in ways we can’t imagine. And we all get to support each other, as well.

I think we have all had, at one time or another, those certain buttheads that have helped make us who we are today. I learned at a very young age to develop a thick skin and let things roll off me that would otherwise have driven me to the point of knocking out teeth. But although I did have a few times when that urge was a little too strong to contain, I have been smart enough to walk away from people like that. But I have great tolerance for ignorance nowadays, and my state of politeness is sometimes a little too much. But with these kind of folks, I find a smile does more to piss them off than anything else I could do. So next time you see me smile, I guess you will never know what I am really thinking. Have a super day.

I’m so glad you wrote that. I always say the worst thing you can do with a pissy or ignorant person is to smile and act like you have no idea that they are upset with you.

Meet Renee from Life in the Boomer Lane, a talented fellow blogger I recently discovered who will have you laughing your socks off! She and I have a lot in common: we’re both retired teachers, old enough to call ourselves “Boomers” and have a Love-Hate relationship with ice cream. Speaking of Love-Hate dilemmas, check out her love letter to those Buttheads who made her the fabulous person she is today. And by all means, share the love by leaving her a comment here. Happy Valentines Day to all my wonderful followers–Mwah!
Love,
