We have created a world in which the warped idea of something becomes more powerful than the reality. We are told that illegal immigrants are the devil, that certain politicians and certain media are wicked and deserve punishment for merely disagreeing, that violent videoed acts were actually patriotic, that the economy is in failure, that chidren who died at the end of a gun was a hoax.
We confuse disagreement with evil. We forget that this country is flawed, that the same arguments we are having now have existed since the country was founded, that drawing a line in the sand is the only action available to us.
To all the countless folks who wrote postcards, made phone calls and knocked on doors, Life in the Boomer Lane applauds you. To all the people who believed that sense and sensibility would prevail over hate and nonsense, LBL applauds you. To all the people who got up this morning with their ideals and sanity still intact, LBL applauds you. And to all the people who will continue to fight the good fight, LBL applauds you.
To all the countless folks who believe that immigration built this country and that many immigrants forced to come here illegally deserve better than we have given them, that politicians and media are not the enemy, that the violence of January 6 was less patriotic than delusional, that the economy is, in fact, working, that the loss of a child from gun violence is not only real, but worse, is avoidable, LBL applauds you.
To all the countless folks out there who value honest disagreement, who know that this country’s flaws are real, who believe that drawing a line in the sand merely prevents us from moving forward.
To all the countless folks out there who believed we were better than this, LBL applauds you.
And to all the countless folks out there who will continue to live their lives as though we were, LBL applauds you. But now, she is standing.

I commend you, that you can see clearly today. I can’t.

I understand. Like countless people, my worst fears were realized. I had a pretty strong view of my country, which turned out to be untrue. So, for the time being, I am only concentrating on choosing to be grateful for all those people who invested their hearts and souls into their idea of what this country could be. We have been through dark times: hundreds of years of slavery, Jim Crow, the wholesale massacre of the American Indian, closed doors when Jews were trying to escape Naziism, child labor, sweat shops, McCarthyism. The list goes on and on. We have never been the great shining country we believe ourselves to me. Rather, we have lurched along, thanks to profound natural resources and a geographic location that protects us. From the confusion and the fear, we have managed to survive and to occassionally produce a society that has inspired the world. At this moment, the majority of people have chosen this man, whether out of personal financial gain or fear of “other” to lead them. Now they have him. His election doesn’t affect my own values or my own reality. If anything, it makes them stronger.

This is beautiful. I’m still in shock.

Thanks, Kate. As is half the country. We believed we knew this country. For this moment, at least, we were wrong. But it doesn’t mean that our values or our realities were wrong. I’m so proud that I stand for the values I have. No one can take that awy from me.

Your post actually made me cry. I had been feeling dread and doom, but no tears had fallen.
I am heartbroken.

I am heartbroken, as well, although I suspected this would happen. But I am choosing gratitude. The outpouring of energy and committment from the Dems was astonishing. That’s what inspired me and carried me through the campaign. I can say that my values are stronger than ever. I’m hoping that like-minded people feel the same way.

LBL I have an email in my inbox from Historian Richardson…
I may or may not open the message depending upon the current depression level…
I suspect I’m not in your ‘Applauded’ group…
I recently stepped up efforts for a knee replacement in the event the nightmare came true so I can increase my efforts to: refit, ready and provision my off-grid 40′ sloop and execute the only exit strategy I have: a floatplan for any and all points South…
Fair Winds…

You are most definitely on my Applauded group. Your comments on this blog have shown your values and your wisdom. I suspect that all those who have come in contact with you have benefitted from that. I know that I have. Wherever you sail, you take those values with you. Thank goodness for that.

You are welcome. The grief of half the population is palpable. Now we get to turn it into something else.

This is a dark day for the nation and the world. If I can regain my sanity, I’ll try to begin a search for remnants of hope.

I have no doubt that it will happen. I also believe that many of the people who placed their trust in Trump will be surprised to learn that the events that will follow will not be in their best interest, that the man they believed him to be never actually existed.
