Dear Elizabeth,
I’ve just read your Facebook letter to Sasha and Malia Obama, followed by your apology.
First off, I am impressed that the Communications Director for a Congressman would take time out from her busy and important schedule to address herself to the sartorial appearance of the Nation’s First Daughters. I immediately checked your Facebook page to see what other gems I could gather. But I was sorely disappointed. All I saw was a photo of the Court of Neptune fountain at the front of the Thomas Jefferson Building of the Library of Congress. Did you know that Neptune had a really bad temper? I’m not sure you should be promoting him.
Because you are in the inner circle of movers and shakers of DC, you must know more about Sasha and Malia than I do. I only know that they appear appropriately and immaculately dressed in all photos I’ve seen of them, and I’ve never heard anything about them engaging in any unseemly or illegal behavior. But, again, you know more than I do, so I defer to you.
I wish you had been in such a position of power back in the Bush Administration, when the Bush twins were on their game. The string of news items involving their partying and scrapes with the law, underage drinking, illegal procurement of alcohol, and marijuana use were never ending. But maybe the fact that they were the daughters of a Republican president would have given them immunity from you. Or maybe they had cute clothes that you approved of.
I also wish you had noticed that Sarah Palin’s daughter Bristol, an unwed mother, was recently involved in a drunken brawl. I don’t remember what she was wearing during the pregnancy and brawl period, but I can only assume it was appropriate and so it escaped your commentary.
I deeply regret that your innocent caution to Sasha and Melia about their clothing choices would cause such a stir as to result in your having to resign from your exalted position. You said:
“I reacted to an article and quickly judged the two young ladies in a way that I would never have wanted to be judged myself as a teenager. After many hours of prayer, talking to my parents and re-reading my words online, I can see more clearly how hurtful my words were. Please know that these judgmental feelings truly have no place in my heart. Furthermore, I’d like to apologize to all of those who I have hurt and offended with my words, and pledge to learn and grow (and I assure you I have) from this experience.”
Wow, Liz, “many hours of prayer?” Gosh, it took you that long to see that your words might have been hurtful? Then again, your political party doesn’t respect its position very much, or the nation for that matter, so I’m guessing you’re coming up a little short in the “good role model” department. Nevertheless, stretch yourself. Rise to the occasion. Act like being a civilized person matters to you. Write and speak words that deserve respect, not condemnation. And certainly don’t make a spectacle of yourself.
If this isn’t possible, perhaps Sarah Palin or Bristol Palin would consider hiring you to do their PR.
Best,

That’s hitting the nail on the head!
We all say snarky things to each other about public figures from time to time. In this day an age, people, especially folks with platforms like Ms Lauten’s, need to be aware of what they say and how hurtful they are when they say these in a very public forum that is likely to be heard by the subject.
I do hope that Ms. Lauten has a challenging time finding her next post; sadly, I doubt she will.

I agree with you. She will either pop up as a talking head on Fox News or will make the rounds of the conservative gatherings, as a speaker.

She may not get a PR gig with a Palin, but I suspect she’ll play victim to “liberal press” mean-spiritedness and make a few bucks. All part of the GOP short line.

Agreed. Or maybe she will write a book about the power of prayer. After all, Bristol Palin now writes about motherhood and family.

Well said. The children are in a bad, no win situation to begin with. They should be off limits, no matter who is in power or in the White House. Lauten’s rant was disgusting, and her apology weak at best. This was just another hurtful barb by a party that wouldn’t know christian values (as they claim) if they were hit in the face with them.
Great comeback.

Thanks, Barney. These people have gone far beyond what is acceptable behavior. The children of Presidents have historically been off-limits to this kind of insult. But these people don’t much care about simple human decency. They are too absorbed with their Family Values drivel.

I totally Agree with LBL – You would have thought ms Liz (she doesn’t deserve a capital M) would be hard at work communicating the plan how Her Boss & the other Republicans were going to keep OUR Government funded to operate – also she could have stated Her thankfulness to ALL Tax payers for funding Her position – sure hope the rest of her tweets are sweet – former underpaid Congressional Support Staffer

You make a great point. She probably had the extra time because her boss, like others, was more concerned with stopping government than with keeping it going.

I have not seen anything that leads me to believe Ms. Lauten is married and/or has any children much less teenage girls born either in or out of wedlock (see how easy it is to
disparage someone without regard to facts). I too noted how long it took in prayer etc to conclude she might have been wrong. Either her God is not a good communicator or she is not a good listener. For someone in the communications field that seems strange. I could perhaps conclude she is a better speaker or writer than a listener but given her posting
that would makeher a truly awful listener – maybe that explains it. @u

My grandmother was going on and on about this, this morning. How that woman was so right and blah, blah, blah and I just think in the grand spectrum of things it matters very little what they wore or did. Could she have not made face, sure, she could have stood there prim and proper, but she made faces. Oh God! The ruination of our country cometh.
Maybe there is a engulfing generation gap, but I could really car less about their clothing or faces.

Whatever mildly inappropriate behavior the Obama exhibited was not cause for the insulting and hurtful statements that resulted. But I suspect that, like other things, the opinions will fall along party lines. Can you imagine how the GOP would have reacted if the Ford twins were trashed like that?

I will echo Cindy L. with Thank You, Thank You, and Thank You. All manner of rude, disrespectful and degrading words are used against the First Family. It seems to be just fine with some people…but they’re not racist, no not at all. The First Family has more dignity and classiness in their pinkies than all those jokers put together, especially miss “I prayed for many hours”–prayed about what, exactly? I have to stop now, sorry LBL. Just one more thing: her comment about their clothing, trying to imply you-know-what. Disgraceful. She should have to do public service somewhere. Okay, I will stop now. Thanks, LBL. Great post.

Well said! Thanks for calling ms Lauten out. In view of the hundreds of photos I’ve seen of those girls looking attentive, wholesome and charming, she must have had to look hard to find one where both of them were not completely “on.” Of all the public figures who behave inappropriately, the focus on Sasha and Malia seems misplaced in the extreme. What a bully.
Life in the Boomer Lane
December 2, 2014
Well said. The Obamas have done a great job presenting their daughters in age-appropriate respectful clothing. It’s tough enough to raise a teenager, let alone to do it in the public eye. These girls are called upon to sit or stand quietly through endless speeches, ceremonies, etc. I remember how I was at that age. Yikes, I would have been outstanding fodder for the likes of Ms Liz. As you said, she is a bully. Plain and simple.

Great post. When I first heard the story, my first thought was with all of the issues needing discussion, we get to spend time on this useless stuff. Since she is a Communication Director for a Congressperson, I would like to know why the House has never taken up the bipartisan Senate Bill on immigration which has some of those tough border control measures in it. I would like to know why Republicans continue to be against the ACA when it is showing success under multiple measures and is based largely on a GOP idea and 65% of people say they want it continued per survey of yesterday. I would like to know why we are not moving at a faster pace into solar/ wind energy especially when the financials are becoming even more compelling, percentage job growth in solar is double-digit and you cannot see, feel, taste, smell or get sick from their use unlike the air and water pollution caused by fossil fuel use. But, I guess that is just me as an Independent voter wanting Congress to focus on issues of import.

I know the left have their share of idiots, sadly most suffer from letting their dicks think for them, the right, well they just say stuff and it takes them overnight to realize their words make them look like a DICK. What creeped me out about this was that Lauten was looking at these kids (they are minors) in a bar-seating way. Eeeew. Should they be shrouded instead? Hidden in a back room until married off? Dressed in boys’ clothing? Wonder what would have satisfied her.

Regardless of anyone’s political beliefs, children should always be off limits for anyone in the public eye. Unfortunately, individual parties as well as the media have not always honored that simple unwritten rule. Children are always innocent victims of someone’s desire to make a name for themselves by being obnoxious or outrageous simply to grab headlines. My guess is she’ll need more than a few hours of prayer to straighten out her distorted sense of right and wrong. But she’s not alone in her bias attacks. This works on both sides of the aisle as well as society in general. Sad.

I usually keep my nose out of the political arena precisely because of shenanigans of the sort displayed by Elizabeth Lauten. This is also a reason why I don’t use Facebook as much as I used to anymore as well as people use social media as a way to act all big, saying sh*t about people they wouldn’t have the cojones to say about them to their face… Kudos to Life in the Boomer Lane. Mil gracias. I rarely vent like this, but her smug sense of entitlement to write such drivel had me in a rage. I later found out that, as a teenager she had a couple of arrests for underage drinking and shoplifting. I haven’t confirmed this, but it’s so perfect. Flawed people making irresponsible statements about those who did no wrong. Ugh.

Renee, I was reading many of the comments and was reminded of what happened to Harry Truman’s daughter. She had a dance recital as a young girl and a reporter critiqued her performance in the paper in less than flattering terms. Truman called the reporter on the carpet and the nation stood behind him as father. Again, good post. BTG

I hadn’t heard the story about Truman, but the children of Presidents should have a certain amount of immunity from the press. And certainly, the criticism should never be a thinly-veiled stab at the President, himself. Using children that way is completely unacceptable under any circumstances.

Ms. Lauten was absolutely in the wrong here and she paid a price. Let this be a cautionary tale for all of us. Social media is a powerful and unforgiving tool.
